Alberta, Canada – In response to growing concerns about aggression and violence in schools, the Alberta government is establishing a dedicated task force. This new initiative aims to address the escalating challenges faced by teachers and students, ensuring safer and more supportive learning environments across the province.

The announcement follows mounting pressure from the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA), which has been vocal about the increasing incidents of disruptive and aggressive behaviour in classrooms. What the Task Force Will Do

This includes professional development focused on de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed practices, and mental health awareness.
• Engaging Parents and Communities: Fostering collaboration between schools, parents, and community organizations to create a network of support for students and families.
• Reviewing Existing Policies: Evaluating current policies and procedures related to student discipline and safety, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring alignment with best practices.

A Proactive Approach

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange emphasized that the task force represents a proactive and collaborative approach to addressing a serious issue. “We are committed to ensuring that our schools are safe havens for learning and growth,” she stated. “This task force will provide valuable insights and recommendations to help us create a more supportive and inclusive environment for all students and educators.”

The ATA's Perspective
