Bill Gates: I Didn't Know of Epstein's Crimes, Lawmakers Hear

Bill Gates testified before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, stating he was unaware of Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal activities. The Microsoft co-founder appeared on Capitol Hill to address questions regarding his past relationship with the convicted sex offender.
During the hearing, Gates firmly denied any knowledge of Epstein’s offenses. He explained that his interactions with Epstein were primarily focused on discussions about philanthropy and global health initiatives. Gates acknowledged meeting with Epstein on several occasions, including a trip to Epstein’s island in 2014, but insisted that these meetings were intended to explore potential avenues for charitable work.
The House Oversight Committee initiated the inquiry into Gates’s relationship with Epstein as part of a broader investigation into the backgrounds and potential conflicts of interest of prominent philanthropists and donors. Lawmakers questioned Gates about the nature of his interactions with Epstein and whether he took sufficient precautions before maintaining contact with someone who later faced serious allegations.
Gates emphasized that he regrets his association with Epstein, particularly given the severity of Epstein’s crimes. He stated that he was deceived by Epstein's public persona and that he now understands the gravity of his error in judgment. He added that he has cooperated fully with the committee’s investigation and is committed to ensuring that his philanthropic work is conducted with the highest ethical standards.
The hearing marks a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny of Epstein’s network and the individuals who maintained relationships with him. The committee's findings and recommendations could have broader implications for philanthropic organizations and the vetting processes they employ.
