Star Wars Stuntman Avoids Jail After Benefits Fraud

A former Star Wars stuntman has avoided a prison sentence after admitting to fraudulently claiming £30,000 in benefits while spending a reported £400,000 on luxury items, including stays at The Ritz and private jet travel. Gerry Sherard, 65, appeared in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi as a stormtrooper, a role that contributed to his earnings.
Sherard, of Stockton-on-Tees, pleaded guilty to five counts of failing to declare a foreign income and five counts of failing to report capital between 2015 and 2020. Investigations revealed he had not declared income from stunt work and appearances abroad, leading to the overpayment of benefits. Despite receiving state support, he reportedly spent a significant sum on lavish holidays and travel.
Teesside Crown Court heard how Sherard’s spending habits included stays at prestigious hotels like The Ritz and flights on private jets. The total amount spent during the period of benefit fraud was estimated at £400,000. Prosecutors detailed the discrepancy between Sherard’s claimed financial situation and his actual lifestyle.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the offences, the judge suspended Sherard’s 18-month prison sentence for two years. He was also ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs and a victim surcharge. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is seeking to recover the fraudulently obtained benefits.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by the DWP to investigate and prosecute benefit fraud, ensuring public funds are used appropriately. Sherard’s involvement in a well-known film franchise added a high-profile element to the proceedings, drawing public attention to the consequences of benefit fraud.
