Measles Alert in Sydney: Thousands Urged to Watch for Symptoms After Vietnam Return

Sydney, NSW – NSW Health has issued an urgent public health warning following the return of a person with measles from Vietnam, where a significant outbreak is currently underway. Thousands of Sydneysiders are now being urged to be vigilant and monitor themselves and their families for any signs and symptoms of the highly contagious disease.
The individual, who recently travelled from Vietnam, visited several locations in Sydney while infectious. NSW Health is working to identify and contact close contacts who may have been exposed. The warning specifically targets those who visited the following locations during the period mentioned (details of locations would be inserted here, e.g., specific shopping centres, public transport, etc.).
What are the Symptoms of Measles?
Measles begins with flu-like symptoms, including:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, water eyes
These are followed by a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. A key characteristic is small white spots inside the mouth called Koplik’s spots.
Protect Yourself and Your Family
The best protection against measles is vaccination. NSW Health strongly recommends that everyone who is not already immune receives two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. It’s particularly important for children, healthcare workers, and anyone planning to travel overseas.
“Measles is highly contagious and can be serious, especially for young children and those with weakened immune systems,” said a NSW Health spokesperson. “We urge anyone who suspects they may have measles to isolate themselves immediately and seek medical advice. Do not go to emergency departments or GP clinics without calling ahead to prevent further spread.”
Where to Get Vaccinated
The MMR vaccine is available free of charge to eligible individuals through the National Immunisation Program. You can also get vaccinated through your GP or a travel clinic. Check the NSW Health website (link to website would be inserted here) for more information on vaccination locations and eligibility.
Stay Informed
NSW Health is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. The public is encouraged to stay informed by checking the NSW Health website and following official health channels.
