Heng Swee Keat Named SIT's First Chancellor for 5 Years

Singapore – Former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has been appointed as the inaugural chancellor of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), effective June 1. The appointment is for a five-year term, marking a significant leadership role for Heng within the nation’s tertiary education sector.
Heng’s appointment as chancellor comes as SIT continues to evolve as a university of applied learning and technology. As chancellor, he will provide guidance and oversight to SIT’s strategic direction, governance, and overall development. The role is largely ceremonial, but also involves representing SIT at key events and fostering relationships with stakeholders.
Despite stepping down from his position as Deputy Prime Minister, Heng remains actively involved in national initiatives. He currently chairs the National Research Foundation, playing a crucial role in shaping Singapore’s research and innovation landscape. Additionally, he serves as a director on the board of GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, contributing to the nation’s long-term financial stability.
The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) was established in 2014 and focuses on applied learning, bridging industry needs with academic pursuits. It offers a range of degree programs designed to equip graduates with practical skills and knowledge relevant to the evolving demands of the Singaporean economy and global market. The appointment of a prominent figure like Heng Swee Keat as chancellor underscores SIT’s commitment to excellence and its growing importance within the nation’s education system.
