Snap & Report! Anthony Loke Urges Public to Help Catch Speeding Buses and Lorries
Kuala Lumpur – In response to a concerning rise in road accidents, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has issued a call to the public, encouraging them to actively participate in road safety by documenting and reporting speeding buses and lorries. This initiative aims to leverage the power of citizen reporting to supplement enforcement efforts and deter reckless driving behaviour.
Speaking recently, Loke emphasized the importance of public involvement in ensuring road safety. He stated that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) welcomes photos and videos submitted by the public showing buses and lorries exceeding speed limits. These submissions can be crucial in identifying and taking action against drivers who endanger themselves and others.
“We understand that the JPJ’s resources are limited, and we cannot be everywhere at once,” Loke explained. “By empowering the public to act as our eyes and ears, we can significantly enhance our ability to monitor and enforce traffic regulations.”
How to Report: The JPJ encourages the public to submit evidence through their official channels. Details on how to submit photos and videos, including the required information (date, time, location, vehicle registration number), will be made available on the JPJ website and social media platforms. It's crucial that submissions are accurate and verifiable to ensure effective action.
Recent Accidents Highlight the Need for Action: The call for public assistance comes after a series of alarming road accidents involving commercial vehicles, particularly buses and lorries. These incidents have prompted renewed concerns about driver fatigue, speeding, and adherence to safety regulations. The government is committed to addressing these issues proactively and implementing measures to prevent future tragedies.
Beyond Citizen Reporting: Strengthening Enforcement and Driver Education: While citizen reporting is a valuable tool, Loke assured the public that the government is also focusing on strengthening enforcement efforts and improving driver education. This includes increasing JPJ patrols on high-risk routes, implementing stricter penalties for traffic violations, and launching public awareness campaigns to promote safe driving practices. The JPJ is also exploring the use of technology, such as Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras, to monitor traffic flow and detect speeding vehicles.
Public Cooperation is Key: Loke concluded by reiterating the importance of public cooperation in making Malaysian roads safer for everyone. “We believe that by working together, we can create a culture of road safety and reduce the number of accidents on our roads,” he said. The initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to prioritising road safety and leveraging community engagement to achieve its goals.
