Kuala Lumpur: Analysts are urging the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to prioritise internal cohesion and deeper economic integration to significantly boost its influence on the global stage. As geopolitical dynamics shift and regional challenges intensify, strengthening Asean's collective bargaining power is deemed crucial for safeguarding its interests and promoting stability.

Susannah Patton, Director of the Southeast Asia Programme at the Lowy Institute, highlighted the importance of a unified Asean front. "Asean’s influence is intrinsically linked to its ability to present a cohesive and coordinated approach in negotiations and policy-making,” she stated. This sentiment is echoed by other regional experts who believe that a more integrated Asean can effectively navigate complex international relations.

The call for greater integration comes at a time when Asean faces a multitude of challenges, including trade tensions, supply chain disruptions, and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A stronger, more integrated bloc can better withstand external pressures and capitalise on emerging opportunities.

Economic Integration: The Key to Bargaining Power

Experts underscore that deeper economic integration is paramount. This includes reducing trade barriers, harmonising regulations, and fostering greater investment flows within the region. The Asean Economic Community (AEC) blueprint provides a roadmap for achieving these goals, but progress has been uneven. Analysts suggest that accelerating the implementation of the AEC and exploring new areas of cooperation, such as digital trade and green technology, are essential.

“A larger, more integrated market makes Asean a more attractive partner for global players,” explains Dr. Lee Soo Fern, a senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. “This increased attractiveness translates to greater bargaining power when negotiating trade agreements and attracting foreign investment.”

Beyond Economics: The Importance of Political Cohesion

While economic integration is vital, political cohesion is equally important. Asean’s principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states can sometimes hinder its ability to address regional challenges effectively. However, analysts argue that a balance can be struck between respecting national sovereignty and promoting collective action on issues of common concern, such as cybersecurity, climate change, and transnational crime.

“Asean needs to find ways to enhance its institutional capacity and decision-making processes to respond more effectively to crises and emerging threats,” says Patton. This includes strengthening the role of the Asean Secretariat and fostering greater dialogue and cooperation among member states.

Ultimately, the future of Asean hinges on its ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world. By prioritising internal cohesion, deepening economic integration, and strengthening its institutional framework, Asean can emerge as a more resilient, influential, and prosperous regional bloc.
