GPS Leader Supports GE16 & Sarawak State Polls Together
PETALING JAYA: A high-ranking Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) official has expressed support for holding the 16th General Election (GE16) simultaneously with the 13th Sarawak state election. The suggestion, revealed in a statement, aims to streamline the electoral process and potentially reduce costs.
The GPS leader, who requested anonymity, believes that conducting both elections concurrently would be highly beneficial. He stated that coordinating the dates would simplify logistics for the Election Commission (EC) and ease burdens on voters, particularly those residing in Sarawak who would only need to cast one ballot.
While no specific timeline was provided, the leader’s comments come amidst ongoing discussions about the possibility of early state elections in several states across Malaysia. The 13th Sarawak state election is currently slated for 2026, based on the existing term of the current state government.
GPS, a coalition of four Sarawak-based parties – Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) – holds a significant influence in Sarawak politics. Their stance on GE16 and state elections often carries considerable weight within the state and nationally.
The suggestion to combine the elections is not entirely new. Previous discussions have explored similar proposals, citing potential efficiencies and cost savings. However, logistical and legal considerations have always been factors in determining the feasibility of such a move. The EC would need to carefully assess the impact on resources and operational capacity.
This development adds another layer to the political landscape as Malaysia approaches GE16, with various parties strategizing and positioning themselves for the upcoming polls. The possibility of a concurrent election could significantly impact campaign strategies and voter turnout in Sarawak and potentially influence the national political dynamics.
