Penang CM Urges Unity: Time to Move Past 'Jalur Gemilang' Controversy
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 14 – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called for an end to the ongoing debate surrounding the recent incident involving an upside-down Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag). In a statement released today, Chow emphasized the importance of moving forward and focusing on national unity, particularly during this Merdeka month.
The controversy erupted earlier this week when images circulated online showing the Malaysian flag displayed incorrectly at a promotional event in Penang. The incident sparked widespread criticism and outrage, with many expressing their disappointment and concern over the perceived disrespect towards the national symbol.
“Reports have been made, investigations are underway, and the necessary actions will be taken,” Chow stated. “However, dwelling on this issue further will only serve to divide us. It's time to prioritise harmony and understanding within our diverse community.”
He acknowledged the public’s strong emotions regarding the flag, a symbol deeply intertwined with Malaysia’s history and independence. “The Jalur Gemilang represents the sacrifices of our forefathers and the spirit of our nation. It’s understandable that people are passionate about its proper display and treatment.”
However, Chow cautioned against allowing the incident to escalate into prolonged animosity and division. “We must remember that Malaysia is a nation built on mutual respect and tolerance. Let us not allow a single incident to undermine the values we hold dear,” he added.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes as calls for stricter enforcement of flag etiquette and regulations are growing. Some have suggested heavier penalties for those found displaying the flag disrespectfully, while others advocate for increased public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the proper handling and display of the Jalur Gemilang.
Chow Kon Yeow’s message of unity and moving forward resonates with many, particularly as Malaysia approaches its National Day celebrations. His appeal for Malaysians to focus on shared values and national pride aims to heal the divisions caused by the incident and foster a stronger sense of togetherness.
“Let us celebrate Merdeka with renewed spirit and commitment to building a united and prosperous Malaysia,” Chow concluded.
