KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah PKR leader has strongly criticised calls from within the party to discipline nine Members of Parliament who advocated for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into judicial appointments and alleged interference. The leader argues that such actions contradict the reformist spirit that PKR champions.

The controversy stems from a recent push by several PKR divisions demanding action against the nine MPs. These MPs had publicly called for an RCI to investigate concerns surrounding the appointment process and allegations of undue influence within the judiciary. The calls for disciplinary action have sparked a debate within the party regarding the balance between party unity and upholding principles of transparency and accountability.

Speaking to the press, the Sabah PKR leader, who requested anonymity, stated, “Punishing these MPs for raising legitimate concerns about the judiciary is a grave mistake. It sends a chilling message to anyone who dares to speak out against potential wrongdoing, even within our own government.” They emphasized that PKR, as a reformist party, should be encouraging open dialogue and scrutiny, not stifling dissent.

The leader further elaborated, “The call for an RCI was not a personal attack on any individual judge or the judiciary as a whole. It was a principled stand to ensure the integrity and independence of the judicial system, which is the cornerstone of our democracy. Silencing those who raise such concerns undermines that very foundation.”

The debate comes at a sensitive time, as the Malaysian judicial system continues to face scrutiny and calls for greater transparency.
