Pinellas Deputies Use AI to Translate 57 Languages
Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) is rolling out new technology that promises to improve communication with residents. Body-worn cameras used by deputies now feature real-time translation capabilities, supporting 57 different languages.
The initiative aims to break down language barriers and ensure all members of the community can effectively communicate with law enforcement. Deputies will be able to understand and respond to individuals regardless of their primary language, potentially leading to clearer interactions and better outcomes in various situations, from traffic stops to investigations.
The AI-powered translation feature works by instantly converting spoken language from the body camera’s audio into text and providing an audio translation in the deputy’s preferred language. This allows for immediate understanding and reduces the reliance on interpreters, which can sometimes be delayed or unavailable. The technology is intended to enhance officer safety and improve the quality of service provided to the public.
PCSO officials state the implementation of this technology reflects their commitment to serving a diverse community and fostering trust. They believe the real-time translation feature will contribute to a more inclusive and equitable justice system within Pinellas County. The rollout is expected to be phased, with training provided to deputies to ensure proper and effective use of the new capabilities. Further details regarding the implementation timeline and specific training programs are expected to be released shortly.
