“He was scared of hospitals and surgeries, and he was terrified of anaesthesia,” Henstridge shared. “He had a bad experience when he was younger, and it just stuck with him. He was determined to fight it himself.”

The delay in seeking treatment and the subsequent refusal of surgery ultimately contributed to his decline. Henstridge, who was on holiday in the US at the time of his death, was heartbroken when she received the devastating news. She rushed back to the UK and found Darius in a hypoxic state in his apartment.

Darius’s career began with a memorable appearance on the first series of Pop Idol in 2001, where he famously chose to perform Queen’s “Unchained Melody” as his audition song, a bold move that ultimately captivated the nation.
